North Kanto Rap: Ibaraki, Tochigi and Gunma | Rap Atlas

Ibaraki, Tochigi and Gunma sit within reach of Tokyo, but proximity alone does not establish a shared rap sound. Mito’s LUNCH TIME SPEAX reached a national audience through DEV LARGE’s EL DORADO label. Years later, Pxrge Trxxxper, from Shimotsuma, won RAPSTAR 2025 from a reported field of 6,780 applicants. Between those points lie different local labels, venues and battle routes (Natalie’s DEV LARGE history; Pxrge Trxxxper interview; Real Sound’s RAPSTAR account).

This installment of Rap Atlas covers the three prefectures often grouped as North Kanto. Eight main entries and two emerging artists appear under the series criteria. Some moved to Tokyo, but their biographies do not establish a general migration pattern. The sources assembled here also do not establish a common “North Kanto sound.”

Following the prefectures separately

Ibaraki’s record includes Mito and Tsuchiura, with documented connections from the 1990s through the 2020s. In Tochigi and Gunma, several of the national breakthroughs covered here came through prefectural MC battle qualifiers. This balance partly reflects what could be sourced; it is not a comparison of the size or quality of the three scenes.

LUNCH TIME SPEAX worked from Mito and came through EL DORADO before moving into major-label releases. GOCCI describes DEV LARGE’s support in a 2019 FNMNL roundtable. Mr.Low-D later moved from Mito to Tokyo, while t-Ace’s biography records an upbringing in both Chiba and Ibaraki. These are distinct biographies; the sources do not establish a direct line of influence from the crew to t-Ace.

Eight main entries

LUNCH TIME SPEAX — Mito, Ibaraki

The Mito-based crew of GOCCI, TAD’S A.C. and DJ DENKA came through DEV LARGE’s EL DORADO label before a major-label phase (Natalie). Tower Records’ catalog dates the SMEJ single “CHASE” to August 1, 2001 and also lists later independent releases through PARANOEAR SOUND and SLUG TUNE ENTERTAINMENT. The reported 1993 formation and 1998 debut with “Tomatte Tamakka!!!” were not established in primary sources for this edition and are not used as fixed timeline dates.

Mr.Low-D — Mito to Tokyo

His official profile dates his first experience on the mic to 1998 and describes his later solo move from Mito to Tokyo. The profile does not specify where he first began. His album Premium (2009) offers a starting point for his recorded work.

t-Ace — an upbringing in Chiba and Ibaraki

Born on April 3, 1981 and from Okinawa, t-Ace moved to Chiba by the age of three and grew up in Ibaraki from around seven. He began DJing at 14 and changed to rapping at 21, according to Tower Records/CDJournal. The album Kuzu no Hana (クズの華, 2018) provides a listening entry beyond the biography.

DOTAMA — Sano, Tochigi

Sano City’s biography records ten years of salaried work alongside music after graduating from Sano High School, followed by a move to Tokyo in 2012. It does not specify the workplace’s location. DOTAMA joined Freestyle Dungeon‘s original “monster” lineup in 2016 and won UMB GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP on December 30, 2017 (Natalie, 2016; Natalie, 2017; DLE).

He appears as a Sano brand ambassador and on Tochigi’s official future-ambassador list, which dates his appointment to December 13, 2018. He established the independent label Shakaijin Music in 2019. His regional connection is thus documented through municipal and prefectural roles as well as music.

NAIKA MC — Gunma

NAIKA MC won the Gunma UMB qualifier at CLUB ROC TAKASAKI on November 19, 2016, then won the national championship (UMB official list; ABEMA TIMES’s 2020 performance feature). His recording catalog includes The Talk Man Show (2013). The ABEMA feature also covers his performance of songs from Inu, Hashiru (犬、走る), released in June 2020.

Shuhei/SAM (舟平/SAM) — Utsunomiya, Tochigi

UMB’s contestant profile lists Utsunomiya as the place he represents. He won Tochigi’s qualifier on July 2, 2016 at SOUND BASE A NEST and again on September 2, 2018 at STELLA (2016 list; 2018 list). He leads Per Life, documented by the label store and an ABEMA TIMES release feature. The four-track play a life, released on March 14, 2025 under the name SAM/Shuhei, offers a direct introduction to his music.

Ryugo Ishida — Tsuchiura, Ibaraki

Ryugo Ishida is from Tsuchiura, according to Spincoaster’s 2021 single report. He is an MC in Yurufuwa Gang, the project with NENE and producer Automatic formed in Tokyo in 2016 (Natalie profile). Its official site announced “Fresh All Day,” produced by Ryan Hemsworth, and a 2019 tour through Seoul, Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Fuji Taito — Oizumi, Gunma

In Ryo Isobe’s 2019 FNMNL interview, Fuji Taito describes beginning freestyle rap at an older acquaintance’s encouragement in junior high school, and the crew UMA he joined after returning to Oizumi developing into BRIZA. Natalie still identifies BRIZA YAVAISZ DAZE as a Gunma crew in 2025. “Crayon,” with ZOT on the WAVE, reached No. 2 on Billboard JAPAN Heatseekers Songs in the May 2022 tracking period.

The Japanese edition cites Oizumi’s population figures for the end of December 2025: 9,011 foreign residents out of 41,267, approximately 22%. Fuji Taito describes the town in the FNMNL interview as having Japan’s highest proportion of Brazilian residents. That comparative claim is attributed to him; the foreign-resident total is a different statistic and does not independently prove the comparison.

Two emerging artists

LOM — Tsuchiura

LOM, born in 2005 and from Tsuchiura, combines local skateboarding with rap, according to the artist’s independent-label announcement. TOKYO FM’s official Senko Riot 2024 finalist page places LOM among ten finalists selected from 3,078 acts. “LV,” released as LOM & S-Liam with Mukade (百足) and Albert Connor, reached No. 4 on Billboard JAPAN Heatseekers Songs for May 5–11, 2025.

The label separately announced a TikTok weekly music-chart No. 1 in April 2025; the Japanese edition had not corroborated that claim with independent reporting.

Pxrge Trxxxper — Shimotsuma

In a December 2024 MOVEMENT PRESS interview, Pxrge Trxxxper names Shimotsuma, Ibaraki as his hometown. The interview’s first part records the release of “DEATH NOTE” on his 18th birthday, November 6, 2024, establishing the stated birth date of November 6, 2006. He won RAPSTAR 2025 on December 13 from a reported 6,780 applicants (Real Sound; ABEMA TIMES).

Space Shower’s announcement named him for the NEW COMER SHOT LIVE segment of POP YOURS OSAKA 2025 at Osaka-jo Hall on October 18; a post-event primary report was not verified in the source edition. On August 21, 2026, he released “OWAKARI?”.

The two entries document routes through digital releases and selection programs. They do not establish where either artist currently lives. Earlier entries reached wider audiences through other connections, including DEV LARGE’s label for LUNCH TIME SPEAX and battles and television for DOTAMA.

Venues and battle routes

• club SONIC mito, Mito. A live venue open to different genres and experience levels. Its official site carried September–November 2026 schedules when the Japanese edition checked on September 5.
• club FLEEZ. An archived official June 26, 2022 notice records the end of its Takasaki operation that June, following its 2004 move there. A city source about a return to Maebashi had expired; this edition does not confirm that return or the reported 1994 founding year.
• HEAVEN’S ROCK Utsunomiya. The official site carried a September 2026 schedule at the September 5 check.
• Utsunomiya Stella. UMB lists it for the 2018 qualifier and the July 14, 2024 qualifier. Its present operating status was not established.
• Tochigi and Gunma UMB qualifiers. Official records name CLUB ROC TAKASAKI and SOUND BASE A NEST in 2016, STELLA in 2018, and Utsunomiya Stella in 2024. The 2026 qualifier schedule was not verified in the source edition.

Sources and research limits

This English edition follows the Japanese article’s September 8, 2026 fact-check. Venue schedules and UMB lists were checked on September 5. Those dates are retained for changing information. Targeted September 21 checks distinguished DOTAMA’s municipal and prefectural appointments, corrected the Senko Riot entry count to acts, added ABEMA’s official final-day listing for RAPSTAR, and checked the four listening links added to the main entries. The linked sources above are primarily in Japanese; first-party announcements, interviews, chart records and retrospective profiles are identified where used.

• LUNCH TIME SPEAX’s reported formation and debut dates remain outside the fixed timeline. A direct line of influence from the group to t-Ace was not verified.
• The Japanese research did not establish NAIKA MC’s reported 2002 start; Shuhei/SAM’s reported birthplace and teenage relocation; LOM’s reported pair of 2024 EPs; Fuji Taito’s reported 2016 crew formation or an exact age of 15 for beginning rap; or an account of Pxrge Trxxxper recording on an iPhone at his grandmother’s home.
• The TikTok chart claim comes from LOM’s label. Billboard’s Heatseekers result is the independently checked chart record, not corroboration of the TikTok claim.
• The Yurufuwa Gang tour and Pxrge Trxxxper festival appearance are represented as official announcements, without a verified post-event primary account.
• Utsunomiya Stella’s current operation and the 2026 UMB qualifier schedule remain unconfirmed here. The Ucho-ten MC battle in Utsunomiya was excluded for lack of reliable reporting in the research set.
• Tochigi and Gunma may be underrepresented because less material was available to the original research. The article does not establish the absolute amount of activity in any prefecture.
• One act was excluded because secondary references to a Gunma origin conflicted with an official profile, leaving the regional tie unresolved.
