Hokkaido and Sapporo Rap: THA BLUE HERB and the Routes Beyond Tokyo | Rap Atlas

THA BLUE HERB began in Sapporo in 1997, with ILL-BOSSTINO on the mic and O.N.O making the tracks. They stayed in the city and released records through their own label, THA BLUE HERB RECORDINGS. Their second vinyl single, “Chie no Wa,” reached Tokyo clubs through DJ KRUSH’s sets. Nearly three decades later, KRUSH and ILL-BOSSTINO released the joint album XO on August 5, 2026 (Natalie: artist profile; Billboard JAPAN: 2017 profile; Natalie: the two artists in conversation).

This installment of Rap Atlas follows that history alongside other routes out of Hokkaido. Most of the available record concerns Sapporo and its surrounding area. The seven main entries include a group and its individual members; they are separate reading paths, not seven unrelated acts or a ranking. Two newer artists appear afterward. Coverage follows the series’ editorial criteria, with the gaps stated at the end.

Different routes from Sapporo

THA BLUE HERB’s independent operation and N.C.B.B’s major-label debut offer two ways to follow Sapporo rap. THA BLUE HERB played its first Tokyo show at Roppongi CORE in 1999 and appeared at FUJI ROCK in 2000 (FNMNL’s interview with ILL-BOSSTINO). N.C.B.B—NORTH COAST BAD BOYZ—kept Sapporo as its base while making its avex debut in 2004. The six-member lineup comprises HOKT, YOUNG DAIS, DAI-HARD, 1-KYU, SPOCK and Eniwa no Shu (DIG DA GOOD IMC; TuneCore Japan).

They do not exhaust the city’s history. B.I.G.JOE and MIC JACK PRODUCTION built another route to national distribution (Tower Records, May 7, 2009). In 2025, B.I.G.JOE announced that two forthcoming albums would close his career as a rapper. His final solo show, THE LAST DOPE, took place at Zepp Sapporo on December 12. His official store’s concert-film listing describes the performance after the event (Natalie, May 30, 2025; B.I.G.JOE official store).

Sapporo’s prominence also needs a geographical qualification. Hokkaido’s population-vision summary, revised for fiscal 2024 and published in March 2025, states that the city contains more than one-third of the prefecture’s population. Other major cities lie far apart. The concentration of entries here reflects the material this edition could document; it does not establish an absence of rap elsewhere in Hokkaido (Hokkaido Government population vision, PDF).

Seven main entries

THA BLUE HERB — Sapporo

Begin with STILLING, STILL DREAMING, released on TBHR in 1998 and distributed nationally on CD in 1999. The interview about their 2019 self-titled album offers a later point in a career they continued from Sapporo.

ILL-BOSSTINO — also known as tha BOSS and BOSS THE MC

Born on October 27, 1971 and from Nanae in Hokkaido’s Kameda district, ILL-BOSSTINO is THA BLUE HERB’s MC (Tower Records/CDJournal biography). He previously appeared on DJ KRUSH’s “Candle Chant (A Tribute)” (Real Sound). Their August 2026 album XO extends an association that began when KRUSH carried “Chie no Wa” into his club sets. The label-distributor’s release page provides the 15-track list and a teaser; the joint interview follows the relationship in their own words.

O.N.O

O.N.O makes THA BLUE HERB’s tracks (Natalie). In FNMNL’s interview, ILL-BOSSTINO recalls picking up the mic while O.N.O played at GHETTO. His work with the group can be heard on STILLING, STILL DREAMING.

MC Matsushima — Sapporo

A rapper, manga artist and filmmaker born on December 23, 1987, MC Matsushima is described as born and based in Sapporo by Tower Records/CDJournal. The profile records his 2014 UMB Sapporo qualifier win and the founding of the independent label Tokyo Togari Nezumi in April 2015. OTOTOY records four appearances as Hokkaido’s UMB representative, beginning in 2009. The official 2018 battle video provides another entry into his competitive career.

HOKT — a frontman of a Sapporo-based crew

HOKT’s label biography dates his arrival on the scene with “BACK IN DA 2 DAY” to 2003 and identifies him as a frontman of N.C.B.B and HOOD SOUND. On August 27, 2025 he released “Any Other Way (feat. TWO-J & Kidella)”. An official announcement that August described it as the first single from Slow Burning Life, his first solo album in about nine years, then scheduled for November. This guide has not verified the album’s release.

YOUNG DAIS — Asahikawa

Born on October 11, 1981, YOUNG DAIS graduated from an American high school in 2001 and developed his rap career after returning to Japan, according to his agency. Its discography records N.C.B.B’s 2004 major-label debut. His solo debut PLAYLIST followed in 2012, and TOKYO TRIBE brought his acting debut in 2014. An Asahikawa City announcement dated November 24, 2021, PDF identifies him as from the city and records his appointment as a tourism ambassador in January 2021.

SALU — born in Hokkaido, working between Sapporo and Kanto

Natalie identifies SALU as a rapper born in Hokkaido in 1988. OTOTOY describes him making music while moving between his hometown of Sapporo and the Kanto region around Tokyo. That travel is the connection recorded here; this edition does not determine his present base or the extent of his involvement in Hokkaido’s current scene.

Two newer artists

Dumbperson — Sapporo. KAI-YOU describes him as a Sapporo-born rapper who began in junior high school. He appeared at the 17th High School RAP Championship, with his battle against REDWING preserved on ABEMA HIPHOP’s official channel. His single “Kamakura” was digitally released on May 19, 2025.

NASKA — Sapporo. Hip-hop news and video outlet SLUM HOOD STAR identifies Sapporo as his hood. Its January 8, 2025 article introduces “3verse3door” as a single from an EP then planned for 2025. The official distribution page dates the song to December 18, 2024. The EP’s release remains unverified.

Venues, festivals and battles

• CLUB GHETTO, Minami 3-jo Higashi 1-chome. Its own crowdfunding page dates its opening to 1990 and describes it as Sapporo’s oldest established club. ILL-BOSSTINO’s recollection connects it to THA BLUE HERB’s beginnings. Its operating status in 2026 is not established here.
• MORROW ZONE, Minami 7-jo Nishi 2-chome. A UMB Hokkaido qualifier venue in the organizer’s 2024 listing. The official 2025 battle video documents the December 7 tournament; the date and venue are the organizer’s information.
• Sound Lab mole, Tanukikoji 2-chome. An event venue covering multiple genres; see its official introduction.
• PRECIOUS HALL. The official site introduces the venue; BRUTUS’s December 20, 2021 feature describes its standing in club culture.
• RISING SUN ROCK FESTIVAL in EZO, Ishikari Bay New Port. Its first edition took place on August 21, 1999 (official history).
• UMB Hokkaido qualifier. The earliest record located here is Kakuteru’s 2006 win. The tournament’s founding year and a complete sequence of winners are outside the confirmed record.

Staying, leaving and returning

THA BLUE HERB stayed in Sapporo. SALU worked between Sapporo and Kanto. HOKT fronted a crew based in the city, YOUNG DAIS became an ambassador for Asahikawa, and MC Matsushima represented Hokkaido in battles. Following his announced retirement from rap, B.I.G.JOE played his farewell solo show in Sapporo in December 2025. These paths belong on the same map without being reduced to one story about staying home or moving away.

Sources and limits

This English edition follows the Japanese article’s research, last fact-checked on September 8, 2026. Changing profiles and catalogs retain their September 5 check date unless included in the updates below. Targeted checks on September 21, 2026 covered XO, B.I.G.JOE’s concert-film listing, HOKT’s first advance single and August announcement, NASKA’s distribution record and media attribution, and the population document’s publication date. Sources for individual claims are linked above; most are in Japanese.

Additional references retained from the Japanese research include FNMNL on B.I.G.JOE’s retirement announcement and the UMB 2008 official blog, which records Shirokuma’s win and names S-SENCE as the preceding champion. These do not establish a complete year-by-year history.

• A first THA BLUE HERB national tour in 2000 was not verified in the source bodies used for this edition. The FUJI ROCK performance that year is separately supported.
• The sources support Hirano listening during competition, not specifically before the final.
• HOKT’s birth year and birthplace, and O.N.O’s solo-release chronology, were not verified for this edition.
• N.C.B.B’s reported 2003 formation and YOUNG DAIS’s joining date remain unconfirmed. The 2003 compilation and 2004 major debut are separate catalog records. The sources also leave the relationship between N.C.B.B and THA BLUE HERB’s networks open.
• The battle record is incomplete: MC Matsushima’s reported 2017 appearance, the local winners attributed to NastyTEZ in 2011 and KAI in 2012, and the 2025 winner were not verified against annual official results.
• DAI-HARD, 1-KYU, SPOCK and Eniwa no Shu appear as crew members but do not receive individual profiles because separate corroboration was not established.
• Contemporary scenes in Asahikawa, Hakodate, Obihiro, Kushiro, Kitami and elsewhere are underrepresented in the research.
