Niigata–Hokuriku Rap Atlas: Five Prefectures, No Single Center

Featured57 min read

There is no single Niigata–Hokuriku rap scene.

This atlas covers Niigata, Nagano, Toyama, Ishikawa and Fukui. The grouping is useful on a map, but it is not a claim that artists across all five prefectures belong to one movement. Hokuriku usually refers to Toyama, Ishikawa and Fukui; Shin’etsu joins Niigata and Nagano. Club circuits, MC-battle qualifiers and local identities do not always follow that administrative shorthand.

That differs from the concentrated histories mapped in HIPHOPCs’ Kawasaki and Yokohama atlas and the many-center model in its Tokyo atlas. Here, the useful unit is an editorial map, not a unified five-prefecture network.

Geography sets the frame without proving why any venue opened or closed. Japan’s preliminary 2025 census counted 6,826,708 people across the five prefectures, compared with 9,193,657 in Kanagawa alone. Their combined land area is roughly 16 times Kanagawa’s. The population figures come from the Statistics Bureau of Japan; the area comparison uses the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan.

Fewer people are distributed across far more ground. That does not establish a causal story about club supply or touring. It does explain why an account built around one dominant crew, neighborhood or signature sound would misdescribe the editorial map.

The 10 core entries are NITE FULL MAKERS, USU (formerly USU a.k.a. SQUEZ), Hilcrhyme, MOROHA, MASS-HOLE, addginjahzz, MC小法師, sagwon, Foolsdayboy and Yvng Patra. Their order is approximately chronological, not a ranking. Toyama appears in the watchlist and in cross-prefecture production rather than in the core 10.

The argument of this atlas is that the region becomes legible through documented connections rather than one sound: UMB archives join prefecture names to MCs; Hilcrhyme links a local crew history to a mass-market record; artists built labels and workspaces; and Fukui producers became audible on records made in Kanazawa.

Five findings organize the page:

  • Hilcrhyme’s mass success was connected to Niigata’s underground, not detached from it.
  • Official UMB records connect NITE FULL MAKERS’ three MCs across consecutive Niigata qualifiers.
  • In 2022, artists in Niigata and Nagano built working infrastructure; DA POINT 117’s shop later closed in January 2026.
  • Fukui is not blank: MC小法師 meets the core criteria, while Fukui beatmakers helped shape two addginjahzz albums.
  • Counting only rappers by birthplace makes the region look thinner than its production networks actually are.

This page does not decide who is “best.” It documents what can be verified, what remains uncertain and why each name is here.

Hilcrhyme’s “Shunkashūtō” Was Connected to the Niigata Underground

Hilcrhyme requires a careful place in this map because “Shunkashūtō” crossed decisively into Japanese pop.

TOC, from Jōetsu in Niigata Prefecture, met DJ KATSU at the Niigata event Nettaiya in 2001. According to the group’s official biography, Hilcrhyme formed in Niigata on June 9, 2006 and made its major-label debut on July 15, 2009 with “Junya to Manami.”

The original act was a duo. DJ KATSU left on March 19, 2018, and the group’s official notice said Hilcrhyme would continue with TOC as its only member. This edition therefore separates the historical duo from the current one-member configuration. (Hilcrhyme official notice — Japanese)

The second major single, “Shunkashūtō” (春夏秋冬, literally “Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter”), followed on September 30, 2009. It reached No. 6 on Oricon’s weekly singles chart, and Hilcrhyme received newcomer awards at both the 51st Japan Record Awards and the 42nd Japan Cable Awards.

The distribution pattern matters as much as the chart peak.

The song became available as a chaku-uta mobile download on August 26, before the CD release. Chaku-uta and chaku-uta full were separate paid formats for Japanese mobile phones, central to the market before subscription streaming became dominant. The August release reached No. 3 on RecoChoku’s weekly chaku-uta chart. The full-song version did not begin on the same day: it launched on September 16 and reached No. 1 on RecoChoku’s September 17 daily chart. Universal Music’s contemporaneous news archive also records a No. 1 August cable-radio inquiry ranking and nationwide FM power play.

The Recording Industry Association of Japan’s official databases show the gap between disc and download demand. The CD single received Gold certification in October 2009. The chaku-uta version reached Million in February 2010, the full-song download reached Million in December 2009, and the PC single download reached Platinum in April 2010. Readers can reproduce the result by searching 春夏秋冬 in RIAJ’s Gold Disc database and download-certification database.

The certification categories cannot be added together, and the evidence does not support a digital-only origin story. It does show that mobile downloads were a major component of a hit already moving through cable radio, FM promotion and, later, CD sales.

The current-status record reaches 2026. Hilcrhyme released “喜怒哀楽” on May 20 and “美しき日々” on July 15, then held the 20th-anniversary concert “朱ノ鷺 2026” at SGC HALL ARIAKE on July 18. (first single announcement — Japanese · second single announcement — Japanese · concert page — Japanese)

On August 14, the official site announced the 14th album 2026 for October 7 and a seven-stop tour scheduled from October 11 through December 19, including Niigata Terrsa on December 13. Hilcrhyme was also scheduled to perform at HAKUBA Mountain Festival in Hakuba, Nagano, on August 29. The Hakuba appearance, album and tour were announced, not completed, at this edition’s cutoff. (album and tour announcement — Japanese · official live schedule)

Hilcrhyme’s relationship to the local underground is also documented directly. In January 2022, the group’s official site introduced NITE FULL MAKERS as the local Niigata hip-hop group to which TOC had belonged before his major debut. The announcement described them, in Japanese, as local legends and accompanied the video for “Be one feat. NITE FULL MAKERS,” filmed at a Niigata Terrsa concert. (Hilcrhyme official announcement)

NITE FULL MAKERS had released its first full album, N, on March 13, 2009. Hilcrhyme’s major debut came four months later. One of the earliest documented full-album presentations of Niigata’s crew scene and a nationally charted pop breakthrough were not separate eras. They came from connected people.

Ten Core Artists and Groups

An artist or group qualifies through either of two routes:

  • Criterion 1: an official streaming or nationally distributed release plus documented media, chart, festival or competition evidence;
  • Criterion 2: a historical role in the regional scene supported by more than one source or by a strong first-party record paired with independent evidence.

The list is selected, not exhaustive. A missing prefecture or artist does not mean that no scene exists there. Public records for all 10 entries were rechecked to the same August 24, 2026 cutoff.

NITE FULL MAKERS — Niigata, formed 2003; lineup changed

NITE FULL MAKERS emerged from DJ YOSHII’s INTERFACE & FACTOR circle, but the lineup was not fixed across its history. A 2024 FM-NIIGATA profile — Japanese dates the formation to 2003 and identifies a core three-MC, two-DJ roster: USU a.k.a. SQUEZ, TOTOROW, SWAMP, DJ TORA a.k.a. TAZAWA and DJ ZEN. A December 2006 track credit for “GIVE IT SHOT” instead lists five MCs—USU, TOC, TOSHI, TOTOROW and SWAMP—with DJ ZEN. (contemporaneous track listing — Japanese · Apple Music release record) This edition therefore does not apply “three MCs and two DJs” to every period.

The early discography has a separate source conflict. FM-NIIGATA’s retrospective dates the mini-album SUNRIZE to 2005, while product ledgers agree on July 2006 but not the day: Rakuten Books — Japanese gives July 21 (IFN-1; JAN 4948722294450), and Tower Records — Japanese gives July 31 (IFN-001); a secondary participation table gives July 25. This atlas therefore fixes the date only to July 2006 and preserves the disagreement.

The first full album, N, arrived on March 13, 2009 through INTERFACE & FACTOR. Its guests included Osaka crew Infumiaikumiai and JAY’ED; DJ WATARAI, onodub and Sky beats appeared among its producers. Distribution pages at Disk Union, Castle Records, HMV and Tower Records repeated a label-supplied description calling the act Niigata’s most important group.

Those listings are not four independent editorial judgments: much of the copy is identical. This atlas therefore does not use the number of stores as proof. The stronger evidence is the nationally circulated album, the members’ battle history and Hilcrhyme’s 2022 first-party description and collaboration. Criteria 1 and 2.

The latest official group record found for this edition is the 2022 “Be one feat. NITE FULL MAKERS” collaboration and Niigata Terrsa appearance. That observation is not a claim that the group disbanded or entered hiatus.

USU — Niigata; formerly USU a.k.a. SQUEZ

USU is one of NITE FULL MAKERS’ three MCs and a central link between the first documented crew era and a younger generation. The historical group credit retains USU a.k.a. SQUEZ; his current release profile uses USU.

Battle circulation helped carry his name outside Niigata. In March 2024, he released “Straight up,” a relay featuring seven younger rappers from Niigata and Nagano: Dr.KID, Lil Bell Dice, Ik0aN, Fitray, Kitaro yvng jet, MaM and Dr.ilda. The project makes his historical role easier to define than a nostalgic “veteran” label would: he remained an organizer across generations. (SLUM HOOD STAR)

The 16-track Locus, identified in its distribution copy as his 10th album, followed on December 5, 2025. His 2026 sequence reached “Re:Pray” on July 24 and “Mission” featuring JAMMY RICCH, TONYY LOTTA and lotus on August 14, the latest release listed at this cutoff. (TuneCore Japan · Apple Music) Criteria 1 and 2.

Hilcrhyme — Niigata, formed 2006

Hilcrhyme formed in Niigata, and the documented NITE FULL MAKERS connection keeps its major-label history inside this map. The pop-versus-hip-hop disagreement does not erase that chronology; the full status record is documented above. Criteria 1 and 2.

MOROHA — Nagano, formed 2008

MOROHA consists of Afro and UK, high-school classmates from the Ueda area of Nagano. UK’s single acoustic guitar accompanies Afro’s rap; the duo reached Nippon Budokan without replacing that arrangement with a conventional band.

After working through its own YAVAY YAYVA RECORDS, MOROHA made a major-label debut through Universal Sigma on June 6, 2018 with MOROHA BEST: Jūnen Sairoku. The duo held a solo Nippon Budokan concert on February 11, 2022.

MOROHA then entered a hiatus after its December 21, 2024 performance at Ebisu The Garden Hall. This is a hiatus, not a reported breakup. (MOROHA official notice · Music Natalie)

Afro released his first solo album, Mushoku Kakusei (無職覚醒), through Pony Canyon on July 29, 2026. The 12-track record is documented on the label’s official page. His 11-stop solo tour began at Shinjuku MARZ on August 4, according to a post-show Real Sound interview.

The tour is scheduled to return to Ueda on September 13 at Sai no Tsuno, not Ueda Eigeki as an earlier announcement had indicated. At this article’s August 24 verification point, that show had not yet taken place. (Venue listing) Criterion 1.

MASS-HOLE — Matsumoto, Nagano

MASS-HOLE works as both rapper and beatmaker. His activity through KINGPINZ, FOUR HORSEMEN, the independent label DIRT RAIN and the Matsumoto base DA POINT 117 connects the city directly to Japan’s underground rap and beat circuits.

The second rap album ze belle, released by WDsounds on January 20, 2021, included ISSUGI, COVAN and SHOKO & THE AKILLA. A two-LP edition followed in August. (Qetic · P-VINE)

On July 12, 2024, he and Nagano rapper-beatmaker BOMB WALKER released the seven-track joint album BANDIT through MASS-HOLE’s DIRT RAIN label. It documents a current connection between Matsumoto and BOMB WALKER’s home area of Yamanouchi within Nagano. (Apple Music · CDJournal — Japanese)

On November 26, 2025, MASS-HOLE released the 15-track beat album RAW DEALS through dirt rain. TuneCore credits him as composer, producer and drummer on every track. (TuneCore Japan · Apple Music) His DA POINT 117 work is examined once, in the infrastructure section below.

Two physical records extend the file into 2026. The June 2 mix CD SEE YA selects records that had been sold at DA POINT 117 and turns the closed shop’s stock into an audio document. (WENOD — Japanese) On August 19, P-VINE officially issued Senninsho’s BOY MEETS WORLD (MASS-HOLE REMIXES) as a limited LP; MASS-HOLE had rebuilt the full 2018 album for a previously promotional-only remix edition. (P-VINE — Japanese) At the cutoff, that LP—not RAW DEALS—was his latest verified release credit. Criteria 1 and 2.

addginjahzz — Kanazawa, Ishikawa, active from 2014

addginjahzz is a two-MC, one-DJ group: Jony the sonata, milkyheadone and DJ KENTAROU. Years of independent circulation led to the 13-track first album SALADBOWL on December 4, 2019 and the 16-track dept. on September 2, 2021. (Music Natalie on SALADBOWL · Music Natalie on dept.)

The second album featured Mr.PUG, MULBE, Kzyboost and Toyama artist Eftra, with producers including grooveman Spot. On October 3, 2025, addginjahzz and member DJ KENTAROU jointly released the six-track EP addseason. (Apple Music) The group created a durable production center on the Hokuriku side without pretending that Kanazawa operated alone. Fukui’s contribution becomes visible in the production credits discussed below. Criteria 1 and 2.

MC小法師 — Fukui City

MC小法師, whose name this English edition leaves in its official Japanese script, finished second in the second season of the ABEMA audition series Rapstar Tanjō! in 2018. Leon Fanourakis, then performing as LEON a.k.a. Shishi, won the season.

He moved to Tokyo at 20, released the debut album TOKYO 360, and later returned to Fukui after securing a program with FM Fukui. That route is documented in an individual ENCOUNT interview.

An unofficial historical compilation lists him as Fukui’s 2020 UMB representative; no official winner archive was found, so this page does not present that result as independently confirmed. In 2021, he established the hip-hop company Rai-Fuku Entertainment and became its representative director. A profile associated with him calls it Fukui’s first such company, but no independent source reviewed for this edition confirms the “first” claim. (Fūpo profile)

The nine-track Alarm AM 06:00, featuring Shinpeita and Wanyūdō, arrived on April 6, 2022. The 11-track NEXT 10 followed on December 4, 2024. Apple Music confirms both release dates and track counts. (Alarm AM 06:00 · NEXT 10)

Apple Music lists four 2026 singles through June: “不眠症,” “ナリタイジブン” featuring 玄太, “Sanpo,” and “29” featuring Yuzy Fett and 勇武 (Remix). The latest of those was released June 1. (MC小法師 on Apple Music)

He is included as the 10th core act because the evidence now meets the published rule. The earlier nine-act draft had discovered him only after its list was frozen; this edition corrects the list rather than preserving that process error. Criterion 1.

sagwon — Niigata, born 1999

sagwon entered through the MC-battle wave and moved toward a more melodic recorded style. The 12-track prescription arrived on November 8, 2023; Niigata City producer WooRock handled four tracks. (Apple Music · Mikiki)

On September 25, 2024, sagwon released the nine-track mini-album 2side through RUBiK. Foolsdayboy directed and executive-produced the project and appeared on two tracks. (indiegrab) The release shows the collective operating as a production unit, not only a name attached to individual catalogs. Criterion 1.

His latest release under his own name at this cutoff was the January 22, 2025 single “Spilling out”; his catalog also records later appearances on Foolsdayboy projects. (TuneCore Japan)

Foolsdayboy — Niigata, born 2000

Foolsdayboy works as a rapper and video director. His current profile dates the expansion of his directing work to around 2024 and the launch of his CubeOwl Film brand to 2025; it names Gam Ball and VCE NAVA among the artists whose videos he directed. (TuneCore Japan — Japanese)

His 11-track third album Stay Foolish arrived on November 19, 2025. WooRock is credited on nine tracks, four of them jointly with MacShooter, DJ Pain, WhoIzNate or Say Quizzy. Release copy assigns “Bara (Freestyle)” and “Flooded” to Niigata producer Fuji Rose, while sagwon appears on “Hanger.” Pointed discussed the album’s engagement with contemporary Florida motion music; EYESCREAM’s track list preserves the co-production credits.

The ledger matters more than any claim that the album represents one Niigata sound: local lead producers worked with several co-producers. Foolsdayboy followed it on April 1, 2026 with the 10-track Freeze Foolish, including the sagwon collaboration “3pm.” (TuneCore Japan) Criterion 1.

Yvng Patra — from Niigata Prefecture, born 2002

In first-person interviews, Yvng Patra said he was not attending high school when he began recording at 17. SoundCloud connected him with contemporaries; he joined Xgang and moved to Tokyo a few months later in 2021, when he was high-school age. (PRKS9 — Japanese · KAI-YOU Premium — Japanese) He released the 14-track third album RICH / RISK on January 25, 2025. (Apple Music)

On March 18, 2026, he and Oddy lozy released the six-track EP Batlogue. (Apple Music) The Doc Pauly and MIYACHI collaboration “WAY UP” followed on April 3. (Apple Music) On April 4, he performed on Day 2 of POP YOURS 2026 at Makuhari Messe. During “Selfish BEATJACK,” ralph joined him onstage, as recorded in Spincoaster’s post-event report. For the collaborator’s background, see HIPHOPCs’ English ralph profile.

In a first-person PRKS9 interview — Japanese, he connected “Hood Star” to the brothers he left in Niigata and to giving something back by succeeding. The prefecture is part of the song’s subject, not only a biographical tag. Criterion 1.

Fukui and Toyama Remain Visible in the Credits

MC小法師 establishes that Fukui has a core rapper. Production credits reveal a second layer.

On addginjahzz’s 2021 album dept., Pointed’s credit report names elamp, 6-SenS, BALLHEAD and $szZaaa from the Fukui beat team DRS, plus Berrynice from Fukui’s JEDImaster. Of the seven producers named in that report, five were connected to Fukui; the other two were grooveman Spot from Sendai and WATTER from Itabashi, Tokyo.

BALLHEAD also described DRS as a Fukui-based unit and recalled its early core as himself, 6-SenS and elamp in a first-person interview.

The connection predates dept.. The product track list for the 2019 album SALADBOWL credits four tracks to 6-SenS and one each to BALLHEAD and elamp. (WENOD — Japanese) Both addginjahzz albums were therefore partly built by Fukui producers.

The same dept. guest list included Eftra from Toyama. A Kanazawa group placed Ishikawa microphones, Fukui beats and a Toyama guest on one record. Cross-prefecture work existed before it became easy to package as a “regional collaboration.”

The 2024 joint album INNER SURFACE made another connection explicit: Toyama rapper 翔恵 and addginjahzz DJ KENTAROU made a full 12-track project together, not a one-song guest exchange. (Pointed · Apple Music)

If a regional map counts only where rappers were born, Fukui almost disappears. If it counts who built the tracks, it does not.

UMB Archives Put Prefecture Names Beside MCs

Niigata City’s recurring music infrastructure includes LIVE HALL GOLDEN PIGS in Furumachi, CLUB RIVERST near Niigata Station and club SEVEN NIIGATA in the city center. The circuit has not been continuous.

Niigata CLUB JUNKBOX and CLUB JUNKBOX mini closed on September 8, 2010. LIVE HALL GOLDEN PIGS opened in the same location the following day, later operating RED, BLACK and YELLOW stages. (Musicman)

The venue change does not prove a region-wide causal story about touring. ULTIMATE MC BATTLE, or UMB, provides a different kind of evidence: its official archives record a year, qualifier, winner and affiliation together.

UMB’s official 2008 Niigata report says USU sat out after two consecutive qualifier wins and records TOTOROW defeating NAIKA MC in the final. The official championship roster separately identifies TOTOROW as the Niigata qualifier winner and a NITE FULL MAKERS member. (UMB 2008 official weblog)

The official 2009 weblog names SWAMP as the Niigata qualifier winner and Jony the Sonata as the Kanazawa qualifier winner. The sequence is therefore no longer an inference from an unofficial list: UMB’s own archive connects USU’s two-win run, TOTOROW in 2008 and SWAMP in 2009. N appeared during that sequence.

Retail copy for N calls TOTOROW the 2008 “Hokuriku representative.” This edition gives priority to the tournament’s more precise “Niigata qualifier winner” wording while preserving the broader label as distribution language.

UMB also confirms a December 1, 2024 Niigata qualifier at club SEVEN. The event page lacks a result field, but UMB’s official championship video identifies Key as the 2024 Niigata representative. This page states only what that official record supports. (UMB event page · UMB official video)

An unofficial historical compilation remains a lead for MC小法師’s reported 2020 Fukui representation and Jony’s other years. Those entries are not promoted to official results. Battle history cannot substitute for a full scene history, but it does document the pre-album paths of artists who later made records and organizations.

In 2022, “Leave or Stay” Stopped Being the Only Choice

Two infrastructure projects appeared in different prefectures in 2022.

In Niigata, sagwon and Foolsdayboy formed the collective and label RUBiK with illustrator fu34shi. The combination matters: rapper, rapper-video director and illustrator. It connects music, video and visual identity inside one local unit, but recording, mixing, mastering and co-production also involve other collaborators. The evidence does not support a three-person “fully in-house” claim. (Mikiki — Japanese · EYESCREAM — Japanese)

On October 1, MASS-HOLE opened DA POINT 117 in Matsumoto. The opening report documents it as a shop with office and studio functions. (ABEMA TIMES) This edition does not infer a broader motive from that description.

The shop closed at the end of January 2026. Manufacturer copy for SEE YA says MASS-HOLE used it as a studio after closure, but this edition did not verify the site’s current use. (WENOD) The project is therefore historical infrastructure, not a currently operating shop.

The documented parallel is narrower and stronger: RUBiK combined music, video and illustration; DA POINT 117 combined sales and studio functions; addginjahzz albums used Fukui production. These examples show local functions being assembled, without claiming that population or snow caused them.

That behind-the-microphone layer—beats, images, rooms and release systems—is part of the map even when a room later closes.

Three Artists and Movements to Watch

This section requires a release or production credit within the previous 24 months plus a documented media, competition, festival or chart signal. When a chart claim is self-reported, that limitation stays visible.

Dr.KID — Niigata

Dr.KID released “Leave Me Alone” on October 24, 2025 and appeared in 2026 on 2ikKen’s “YARU (feat. Dr.KID, D.D, Hiwl & LOG hearts) [NGT Remix].” Both are listed on his TuneCore profile.

The same profile says his May 14, 2023 debut single “CHANGE GAME” reached No. 37 on Japan’s iTunes hip-hop/rap songs chart. HIPHOPCs did not find an independent historical chart record, so the ranking remains attributed to the artist’s own profile. His place as the first named participant on USU’s 2024 “Straight up” provides a second, separately visible connection to the Niigata network.

WooRock — Niigata City, producer

WooRock produced four tracks on sagwon’s prescription and nine on Foolsdayboy’s Stay Foolish. The latter was released in November 2025 and covered by national music outlets. This is not a claim that one producer defines a prefectural sound. It is evidence that two prominent 2020s Niigata albums share local production infrastructure.

Two Toyama routes — 翔恵 and Eftra

This edition retains 翔恵’s Japanese styling because no verified official Latin spelling was found. 翔恵 and Kanazawa’s DJ KENTAROU released the 12-track INNER SURFACE on October 8, 2024. The project is a full Toyama–Ishikawa partnership, not a guest verse stretched into a regional alliance.

Eftra documents a second route. His official TuneCore profile identifies his base as Hokuriku Toyama and credits MASS-HOLE with producing the full 2021 E.F.T.R.A EP. (TuneCore Japan — Japanese) The same catalog continued with the seven-track deef, made with riverseas ass** on December 5, 2025, and the four-track The Iron Stove on February 5, 2026; BOMB WALKER appears on the latter. (Apple Music) Toyama therefore connects west to Ishikawa through 翔恵 and east to Nagano’s production circle through Eftra.

These three watch entries are not predictions. They are current, documentable tests of the map’s thesis: release and production relationships can be more visible than one regional stage.

Deliberate Exclusions and Unresolved History

Kan a.k.a. GAMI

Kan a.k.a. GAMI was born in Nagaoka, Niigata, but grew up in Tokyo, first around Takadanobaba and later Kita-Shinjuku, according to a first-person discussion published by Young Champion. His career and historical role are rooted in Shinjuku.

Birthplace alone is not enough for inclusion. No reviewed source established a historical role in Niigata’s local scene, so he is excluded from the core 10 here. That does not erase his birthplace; it keeps birthplace and activity base from being treated as the same fact.

Fuji Rock Festival

Naeba Ski Resort in Yuzawa, Niigata, became Fuji Rock’s long-term home in 1999, as the festival’s official English history records. This wording does not claim an uninterrupted annual run. The festival belongs in the timeline as geographic context, not as a product of the local rap scene or proof of local club infrastructure.

Niigata before 2000

No sufficiently documented public record of the 1990s Niigata club-rap scene was found for this edition.

Niigata DJ HANA the Waxkiller has written a first-person historical series that names venues including People Power and ZIZIQUE, later MAHARA. The installment reviewed here focuses mainly on the 1980s and remains personal recollection rather than independently verified archival evidence. It is offered as a research entrance, not inserted into the confirmed timeline. (HANA the Waxkiller)

Why Publish a Map That Is Still Incomplete?

The main gap is still a primary-source history of Niigata’s 1990s club scene. UMB’s dispersed official archive now resolves USU’s two-win run, TOTOROW, SWAMP, Jony the Sonata and Key, but several qualifier years and much of the pre-2000 club record remain open.

That incompleteness should be visible, not used as an excuse to erase a prefecture. MC小法師, Fukui’s DRS production credits and Toyama’s two routes through 翔恵 and Eftra show why a birthplace-only list fails. In a region without one organizing center, the map has to count beats, images, records, rooms and cross-prefecture collaborations—and label every gap it cannot yet prove.

Inclusion, Correction and Evidence Policy

Rap Atlas does not sell editorial placement or rank selected artists.

  • Core artist or group: must satisfy Criterion 1 or Criterion 2 stated above.
  • Artist or movement to watch: must have a release or production credit in the previous 24 months plus a documented media, competition, festival or chart signal.
  • Geography: birthplace, upbringing, stated base, group formation or a documented historical role must connect the act to the region. Association alone is insufficient.
  • Evidence: official records take priority. Self-authored claims and unresolved source conflicts remain attributed or explicitly qualified; unverified allegations are excluded.
  • Status: scheduled events, hiatuses, closed shops and current releases are kept separate. A new release is not treated as proof of healthy permanent infrastructure.
  • Order and money: order is chronological where possible, never “best to worst.” Payment cannot change inclusion or position; any paid promotion must be disclosed and separated from editorial selection.

The full policy is available on the Rap Atlas criteria page — Japanese. Corrections and proposed additions can be submitted through the contact form — Japanese. Editors verify primary material and independent reporting before updating the regional database, Japanese article and English article together.

The next revision especially needs primary records from Niigata’s 1990s clubs, official results for unresolved UMB Niigata/Hokuriku/Kanazawa years, and documented Toyama or Fukui artists, producers, labels and venues. In this edition, Key is called the 2024 Niigata representative—not explicitly the qualifier winner—and the 2005/2006 SUNRIZE discrepancy remains visible. “Rai-Fuku Entertainment” is an English readability rendering; MC小法師’s “first in Fukui” claim and 2020 UMB result remain attributed rather than independently confirmed.

Verification Note

Sources are linked beside the claims they support. The structural checks rely on Japan’s 2025 census preliminary results, the national area survey, RIAJ disc and download certification databases, FM-NIIGATA’s NITE FULL MAKERS profile — Japanese, the official UMB 2008 and 2009 archives, and current official artist or distributor catalogs. Repeated retailer copy is treated as one promotional source. Japanese material is paraphrased unless an official English original exists.
