Creepy Nuts: Full Profile — From Rap Battles and Turntablism to “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” and Coachella
Creepy Nuts are a Japanese hip-hop duo formed in 2013 by rapper R-Shitei and DJ Matsunaga, a turntablist and producer. R-Shitei is from Sakai in Osaka Prefecture; DJ Matsunaga is from Nagaoka in Niigata Prefecture. They made their major-label debut with Sony Music in 2017.
Seen only through “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born,” their rise can look like an anime-driven global breakout. But the skills came first. R-Shitei won the national ULTIMATE MC BATTLE (UMB) championship three years running. DJ Matsunaga won the Supremacy division—a head-to-head turntablism competition—at the 2019 DMC World DJ Championships.
They did not reach a wider audience by stripping the complexity out of their music. They learned to make dense Japanese rap and intricate turntablism land immediately, even with unfamiliar crowds. That sequence—from live competition through radio and anime to Tokyo Dome and Coachella—is the key to understanding Creepy Nuts.

Where Creepy Nuts Stand Now
“Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” was released on January 7, 2024, as the opening theme for MASHLE: MAGIC AND MUSCLES The Divine Visionary Candidate Exam Arc. By the June 26 chart update, it had logged 19 total weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard JAPAN Hot 100. During Billboard JAPAN’s first-half 2024 tracking period, from November 27, 2023, through May 26, 2024, the song generated 348,998,877 domestic streams and approximately 510 million worldwide, with more than 30 percent coming from outside Japan.
The song also peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Global 200, which includes U.S. activity; the separate Global Excl. U.S. chart does not. In an English-language Crunchyroll interview, the MASHLE production team discussed the worldwide response to both the opening and its dance trend.
But the story did not end with one viral track. “Otonoke,” the opening theme for DAN DA DAN, reached No. 1 on the Billboard JAPAN Hot 100 in October 2024. The album LEGION and a sold-out Tokyo Dome headline show followed in February 2025. In April 2026, the duo played Coachella and completed its first North American tour.
The breakthrough also sent listeners deeper into the catalog. Before “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born,” the duo’s highest Billboard JAPAN Hot 100 position had been No. 35 for “Daten.” During the 2024 run, “Nidone” reached No. 9 and “Nobishiro” climbed to a new peak of No. 58, according to Billboard JAPAN’s interview with the duo. The entry point was new, but listeners did not stop there.
That trajectory matters because the music was not simplified or tailored to English-speaking listeners first. In the same Billboard JAPAN interview, R-Shitei explained that his writing remains rooted in Japanese, while DJ Matsunaga described making tracks with no obvious reference point. Their achievement is not that they made hip-hop safer for a pop audience; it is that they made intricate music legible within seconds without turning it into something else.
HIPHOPCs documented the same principle at work on Coachella’s Gobi Stage in its firsthand field report. The crowd’s movement tracked changes in volume, pauses and DJ Matsunaga’s cuts while R-Shitei continued rapping in Japanese. His voice cut through an early burst of overloaded low end, while the duo held the room with the same stripped-down setup it had used from the start: one MC and one DJ.
Before “japanese,” R-Shitei addressed the crowd in English: “We are Creepy Nuts from Japan. No samurai, no ninja, no Karate Kid, no Mr. Miyagi, no Shohei Ohtani.” The line discarded a ready-made set of symbols for Japan; the performance that followed replaced them with Japanese-language rhyme, a modern cityscape and the mechanics of the duo’s live show.
This does not make the global hit an inevitable result of battle credentials. Anime, choreography, distribution platforms and the ways listeners reused and shared the song all mattered. The more defensible claim is narrower: when an unpredictable wave of attention arrived, the duo already had the timing and technical control needed to hold that attention.
Signature Songs & Works
- 高校デビュー、大学デビュー、全部失敗したけどメジャーデビュー。 (2017 major-label debut single) — This is the title of the single, not the name of an individual track. It turns failed attempts at reinvention on entering high school and university into the release’s banner; failure is not edited out of the résumé.
- “To Us Former Prodigies” (かつて天才だった俺たちへ, 2020) — The song redirects anxiety about talent toward self-revision rather than self-rejection.
- “Nobishiro” (のびしろ, 2021) — Included on Case. Sony Music’s official profile lists it as the duo’s first song to pass 100 million cumulative streams.
- “Daten” (堕天, 2022) — Opening theme for Call of the Night. It was an earlier instance of the duo threading its own perspective through an anime story, two years before the 2024 breakthrough.
- “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” (2024) — Opening theme for MASHLE: MAGIC AND MUSCLES Season 2. It peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Global 200 and logged 19 total weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard JAPAN Hot 100 through June 26, 2024.
- “Otonoke” (オトノケ, 2024) — Opening theme for DAN DA DAN. Its No. 1 run on the Billboard JAPAN Hot 100 showed that the breakthrough could carry into another song and another series.
- LEGION (2025) — The album gathered the duo’s post-breakthrough changes into one project and arrived alongside a sold-out Tokyo Dome headline show.
- “Fright” (2026) — Released on April 10, the date of the duo’s first Coachella appearance. It turns post-breakthrough fear into fuel for what comes next, rather than pretending greater scale erased uncertainty.

Collaborations & Network
R-Shitei is also a member of Umeda Cypher, an Osaka-based rap collective. The connection keeps him rooted in a wider circuit of MCs beyond Creepy Nuts.
On Takuya Kimura’s “Yes, I’m”, R-Shitei wrote the lyrics while DJ Matsunaga composed and arranged the track. The credits show how portable the partnership is: even on another artist’s record, they carry over the same split between words and production instead of expanding into a conventional band.
Their wider network shows how readily that setup travels. Umeda Cypher keeps R-Shitei connected to battle and cypher culture; pop collaborations, radio, anime and overseas festivals place the same one-MC, one-DJ partnership in new settings.
