Who Is PUNPEE? The DJ Who Turned Editing into Long-Form Japanese Rap
Calling PUNPEE a versatile rapper misses the larger design. His most distinctive skill is editorial: he makes meaning between records, voices, eras and formats. A DJ creates a new passage by deciding what follows what. PUNPEE has extended that logic into group chemistry, album sequencing, commentary tracks, animation scoring, family dialogue and joint projects.
That is why a list of his best-known songs only explains part of the work. PSG placed three different voices inside one group. Movie On The Sunday Anthology treated selection and sequence as authorship. MODERN TIMES looked back at 2017 from 2057. The ODDTAXI score moved his craft into somebody else’s narrative, while PUNPEE & BIM made collaboration the name on the cover rather than a guest slot.
This profile uses official label records and first-person interviews to ask one question: how did a DJ’s sense of transition become a long-form method for Japanese rap?

The thesis: he edits time, not only sound
A transition is not empty space. It tells the listener whether two records clash, answer one another or belong to the same world. PUNPEE carries that DJ principle into his own writing. He joins present life to an imagined future, a lead voice to a guest, a finished album to its later commentary and an anime character’s movement to the audience’s sense of time.
This is HIPHOPCs’ critical reading, not a slogan attributed to PUNPEE. The evidence lies in form. MODERN TIMES is built as a 16-track time structure, not a container for unrelated singles. Return of The Sofakingdom was officially positioned as an extra or companion to an earlier project rather than a simple reissue. His collaborations repeatedly preserve the difference between voices instead of using guests as decoration.
PSG and David: learning to arrange people before perfecting a solo identity
PUNPEE formed PSG in 2007 with his younger brother 5lack and GAPPER. The group’s first album, David, arrived in 2009. Those dates and relationships are recorded in SUMMIT’s official PUNPEE profile.
The important fact is not simply that two brothers became known in the same group. PSG required three recognisably different performers to share timing and space. PUNPEE’s later work often places a guest where the song’s function changes; PSG supplied an early laboratory for that choice. 5lack can make a single voice feel self-contained, while PUNPEE is frequently most revealing when several voices alter one another. The distinction is one of editing scale, not a ranking between brothers.
Movie On The Sunday: when sequence becomes the work
SUMMIT’s official chronology records the 2012 release of the mix collection Movie On The Sunday Anthology. A mix is sometimes treated as preparation for “proper” original music. Here it is better understood as a finished statement about placement: records, voices and scene changes become one continuous duration.
The word “Movie” is useful because the sequencing behaves like editing between shots. One ending changes how the next entrance is heard. That is an interpretive claim, but it connects the work to what follows. The temporal design of MODERN TIMES and the screen world of ODDTAXI do not appear as unrelated career pivots once PUNPEE’s authorship is heard in the cut itself.
MODERN TIMES: listening to 2017 from 2057
PUNPEE released his first solo album, MODERN TIMES, on October 4, 2017. SUMMIT’s release record confirms the date and its 16-track sequence, beginning with “2057” and ending with “Hero.”
The future date is not a cosmetic science-fiction device. In a first-person interview with Gizmodo Japan, PUNPEE explains how the idea of 2057 helped move the project. A separate Music Natalie interview describes him revising lyrics after songs existed so that each part could perform its role within the album. The whole did not merely receive a story after completion; the story changed the parts.
By placing a distant viewpoint outside the present, the album makes ordinary life, family, technology and urban time available for reinspection. Its achievement is not simply predicting a future. It creates enough distance for the listener to hear the present as history in progress.
He kept the album open after release
The project did not end when its master was delivered. MODERN TIMES -Commentary-, released on March 9, 2018, adds PUNPEE’s radio-style account of the songs and production. A conventional deluxe edition often adds material. This commentary adds another listening position to the same material.
That year he received Best Hip Hop Artist at the 2018 Space Shower Music Awards. The award records recognition; it is not the reason the album matters. More revealing is the refusal to close the work after success. PUNPEE allowed performance, commentary and later context to keep changing how the album could be entered.
The Sofakingdom and Return: main work and extra content
The Sofakingdom arrived as a five-track project on July 1, 2020; SUMMIT’s contemporary news archive documents the release. Return of The Sofakingdom followed on December 7, 2022, also with five tracks and a different credit structure.
The label describes Return as extra content positioned alongside the earlier work. That language matters. It prevents two opposite mistakes: calling it a reissue of the same EP, or treating its relationship to the original as accidental. PUNPEE again separates a central work from the later angle through which it can be revisited.
Commissioned work is not a detour
PUNPEE cannot be evaluated through releases under his own name alone. Television, advertising, remixes, scoring and production for other artists impose an existing world. The task is not to overwrite that world, but to decide what part of his method should remain visible inside it.
“Versatile” is accurate but incomplete. Rap, DJing, production and scoring are not four disconnected titles here. Each involves arranging material around a scene and an audience. Constraints expose the method because they force a choice between what can change and what must be protected.
ODDTAXI: editing someone else’s story
For the 2021 TV anime ODDTAXI, Skirt and PUNPEE performed the opening theme, while PUNPEE, VaVa and OMSB created score music. The division is documented by the anime’s official disc page and Pony Canyon’s soundtrack record, which lists a May 19, 2021 release.
PUNPEE did not need to turn himself into the main character. The music could support movement through the city, pauses in conversation and the temperature of a clue. After editing time inside his own album, he helped edit the felt time of a narrative whose rules belonged to other creators. ODDTAXI is therefore more than evidence that he “entered anime”; it shows the same method functioning outside his authorship of the story.
“Family Sale”: making family a collaborator
Family appears throughout rap as memory, subject or source of testimony. On “Family Sale feat. Oyaji (Father),” PUNPEE brought his father into the making of the record itself. SUMMIT’s official credits list PUNPEE and his father in the script credit, with PUNPEE as producer; the single was released on October 18, 2023.
The distinction is important. A family story told by one person can harden into a single authorised memory. A second voice makes the memory answerable. The editorial skill first heard among three PSG members becomes a way to stage a family conversation without reducing it to a sentimental anecdote.
PUNPEE & BIM: a joint room, not a guest slot
PUNPEE’s work with BIM is not best described as a veteran adding a younger guest. The five-track Iced Out, released July 9, 2025, carries both artists as the primary name. Its official credits show them sharing lyrics across the project while different producers and mixers move through individual tracks.
A joint name changes the contract with the listener: neither artist owns the whole frame by default. Their differences in generation and vocal texture remain audible as they exchange foreground and support. On December 24, 2025, “MUSEIGEN feat. C6ix, Bonbero & ANI” widened that room again. The label credits PUNPEE and BIM as co-producers and places multiple generations and career positions inside one record without pretending they are interchangeable.
2025–2026: collaboration becomes the update
After Iced Out, PUNPEE moved among joint billing, solo work and live events. SUMMIT documented November 3, 2025 as the first two-man concert built around PUNPEE’s and 5lack’s separate solo sets, rather than a PSG performance. The distinction between group, family and solo identities remained part of the event’s meaning.
“Mornin’26,” released January 28, 2026, is the latest verified solo single in the record checked for this profile. SUMMIT credits Pdubcookin as producer and PUNPEE for the script. The Tokyo Garden Theater schedule also lists Seasons Greetings’26 for February 7; this article treats the surviving schedule as evidence of the announced date, not as independent reporting that every element occurred as planned.
The next releases came under TAXMEN, PUNPEE’s project with OMSB. “THEME OF TAXMEN” arrived March 13, 2026, with lyrics by OMSB and PUNPEE and production by Swisher Beats and PUNPEE. The pair followed it on April 22 with “MISS U feat. Harashima ‘Doman’naka’ Michiyoshi”, produced by Mitsuki and PUNPEE. These are not PUNPEE solo releases; the joint name and exact credits are part of the fact.
He also appeared on ANARCHY’s Crest, released March 27. Music Natalie lists PUNPEE among the guests and reports that KM produced the full album. Taken together, the period is not merely a rise in output. It is a widening network in which PUNPEE changes role from project to project.

What the sources do—and do not—establish
- Place: source wording varies at the sub-city level, so this profile uses “Tokyo” and “Itabashi-centred” rather than asserting a disputed birth ward.
- Interpretation: “editing time” is HIPHOPCs’ analysis of structures and credits, not a quotation presented as PUNPEE’s own slogan.
- Family: only publicly documented creative relationships are included. No private-life inference is made.
- Current record: “latest” means the most recent release verified in official or strong reporting as of August 19, 2026. Solo, joint-project and guest credits remain separate.
- Live listing: a venue schedule establishes the announced date; it is not treated as independent post-event verification.
Frequently asked questions
Who is PUNPEE?
PUNPEE is a Tokyo-based rapper, DJ and producer whose work includes PSG, solo records, PUNPEE & BIM, TAXMEN and music for ODDTAXI. Itabashi is a recurring base in his public production history.
What is PSG?
PSG is the trio of PUNPEE, 5lack and GAPPER. SUMMIT’s official profile dates the group’s formation to 2007 and records the release of David in 2009.
Why is MODERN TIMES important?
Its 16 tracks are organised through a future vantage point: 2057 looks back at the album’s present. First-person interviews show that the larger structure affected how individual lyrics and songs were revised.
What did PUNPEE do on ODDTAXI?
He joined Skirt on the opening theme and worked with VaVa and OMSB on the anime’s score music. Official anime and soundtrack records document those roles.
Are PUNPEE and 5lack brothers?
Yes. PUNPEE is the older brother and 5lack the younger. Together with GAPPER, they are PSG. Their November 2025 concert was separately billed around their two solo sets.
What is PUNPEE’s latest release?
As of the August 19, 2026 fact check, “Mornin’26” is his latest verified solo single. His newer joint-project record includes TAXMEN’s “THEME OF TAXMEN” and “MISS U.” PUNPEE & BIM’s “MUSEIGEN” was released in December 2025.

How should PUNPEE be judged?
PUNPEE’s strength is not that he makes the same sound in every setting. In PSG he arranged three people. As a DJ he turned sequence into form. On MODERN TIMES he used a future date to reframe the present. In ODDTAXI he moved behind the characters. With BIM and OMSB he chose joint names that changed who owned the frame.
The continuity is editorial rather than cosmetic. He connects a voice to what came before it and what must come next. His lasting contribution to Japanese rap is therefore more than a recognisable tone: it is a method for making one track open into another scene.
